“Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12

I’ve got some numbers for you. I thought they were interesting, so maybe you will too. I read them in a magazine, but then looked online for more info, and found some differences, so I’ve averaged them out. Nothing’s perfect and things like this are always changing, but it’s food for thought….
Following are your odds of dying of several different causes:
Heart disease: 1 in 6
Cancer: 1 in 7
Stroke: 1 in 24
Car accident: 1 in 92
Suicide: 1 in 114
Firearm assault: 1 in 319
Drowning: either 1 in 1,008 or 1 in ,8942. There were stark differences from my sources.
Motorcycle: 1 in 1,020
Fire or smoke: 1 in 1,113
Bicycle accident: 1 in 4,919
Air or Space accident: 1 in 5,051 or 1 in 20,000. Not all sources included space.
Accidental firearm discharge: 1 in 5,134
Heat: 1 in 13,729
Venomous bite or sting: 1 in 100,000
Legal execution: 1 in 62,468
Lightning: 1 in 81,000
Earthquake: 1 in 122,000
Flood: 1 in 144,156
But, of course, here’s the most important fact. Overall odds of dying? 1 in 1. And as missionary Jim Elliot said, “When it comes time to die, make sure you all you have to do is die.”
